TROUT LIKE IT COOL

Brook trout are creatures of cool, well oxygenated streams and lakes. They may be found in our smallest streams and largest rivers, from beaver ponds to extensive lakes and from the rapids of a woodland brook to the salt tang of a river estuary. They do poorly in water which consistently exceeds 20
C. The optimum is between 10C and l8C.
Habitat requirements for spawning are very precise and oxygenated water towing through clean gravel is a necessity. This combination is usually found in the fast flowing, broken water (riffle) of stream or where springs well up through gravel in a lake. Springs in a headwater stream are best of all. Young fish (fry) prefer small streams with riffles, pools and protective cover in the form of overhanging banks, logs or rocks. Older trout usually move into larger streams or lakes, with the highest populations being found in moderately sized streams with abundant pools, ample cover and plenty of riffle areas.
